Book Boyfriends

A commercial money-making scheme or the most romantic day of the year, whether you love it or hate it, V day is looming. It’s the time of year where people tend to think about their ‘perfect partners’. I know of lots of perfect men, the only problem is that they don’t actually exist. You-Tuber Carrie Hope Fletcher has written a song called ‘Boy’s in Books are Better,’ and I think I would agree with her.

When I was in year 8, a girl in my science class was reading Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging. I ended up reading every book in Louise Rennison’s series about the funny and outrageous Georgia Nicholson. That was when I fell in love with Dave the Laugh. He was never Georgia’s main love interest, she was always chasing after ‘Sex God’ Robbie or ‘Love God’ Masimo, but Dave was always there for Georgia, giving her advice and making her laugh, with a few ‘accidental snogs’ thrown in. It took ten whole books for them to finally get together. But I was so happy (and also a tiny bit jealous) when they did.

Reading Jane Eyre, I found that I had a thing for Mr Rochester. Okay, he did try to commit bigamy, had an ex-wife locked up in the attic and tricked Jane by dressing up as a Gypsy Fortune Teller, but there was something attractive about his moody persona and what was hidden beneath. As Rochester fell in love with Jane, we saw his softer side. No-one could accuse him of not being persistent as he tried to show Jane how he felt about her. Although the truth about Rochester’s wife tore the two apart, they ultimately ended up together. Initially Jane was worried about being too ‘plain’ for Rochester, but he loved her for who she was. At the end, the roles were reversed when Rochester had lost his hand and his sight in the fire at Thornfield. But true love prevailed and the happy couple have a new-born son at the end of the book. Awww.

Henry first meets Clare in The Time Traveler’s Wife when she was six years old and he is an adult. Although this is a rather strange basis for a relationship, it becomes clear that Clare and Henry are made for each other. Henry is someone worth waiting for. Henry is kind and intelligent. Although the time traveling is completely out of his control he always returns to Clare and he ends up dying in her arms. (Pass me the tissues!)

So, this weekend, not only is it Valentine’s Day, but the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is coming out. I could list 100 more fictitious men who I would definitely date. So move over Christian, you are not the sexiest guy around.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend? I’d love to know. Comment in the box below. Happy V day!
