A Little Help From My Friends

Nearly a year ago, a new girl started work and she is now one of my best friends, I even went to her wedding.

It’s strange, isn’t it? Those rare moments when you meet someone and you just click. In some ways you are such different people with different lives, but it’s like you have known each other forever.

It’s cheesy, but it’s true. Throughout school, college and university I have made friends and been totally convinced that we would be that way for life… it’s funny how things work out.

When you’re young you want to be popular. I guess it’s some sort of instinct thing – survival of the fittest. The more friends you have, the more your value is affirmed. It proves that you’re someone worth knowing. It gives you a purpose and validates your place in the world. But the older you get, the more you come to realise that this isn’t true.

Friends worth having are the ones who make an effort and the ones you are excited about seeing. You can not see them for months and then pick up exactly where you left off. I could count the number of these friends I have on my fingers.

We all get our share of fair-weather friends; the ones who want to know you, but disappear when the going gets tough. But over time, these ‘friends’ fall to the way-side

A couple of weeks ago I read a story about a baby hippo and a tortoise who became friends when they ended up at a wildlife rescue after the tsunami disaster. It pretty much shows that friendship has no boundaries- you don’t have to be ‘like’ someone to be ‘liked’ by them!

True friends are hard to find, so I want to make sure I hold on to them. Things get busy, work gets in the way and I know that I don’t always give my friends the appreciation they deserve. I want to remind all of my friends of how much I love them.
