Get Real: My Journey to Escaping Escapism

daydreamer

Autumn 2013 was one of those times when I was filled with the sweet feeling of youthful optimism. I had just moved back from London after business school and was hopeful about the future. There were so many amazing jobs to apply for! New places to explore! Oodles of gratifying social experiences to be had! The world was mine. However, by... Read the rest of this post...

When Your Fears Come True

runningaway

I sat sulking last Saturday evening feeling like a mix of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch. It was five days before Christmas and my holiday spirit was nowhere to be found. All I could think about was how I was so over December. I felt like crawling above Whoville and yelling ‘bah humbug!’ to all the merrymakers below. So far... Read the rest of this post...

When Culture Vultures Attack

Iggy Bounce

The year 2014 brought slang terms such as ‘basic’ and ‘bae’ into the mainstream spotlight. And ironically it also ushered in a new term on my side of the pond: Columbusing. As seen in this satirical College Humor video, Columbusing happens when the dominant culture (most of the time this refers to people of European descent) adopts elements from non-dominant cultures,... Dating Decisions: Does the Career Make the Man?

suits-mike-ross

Flashback to five years ago: I’m in university attending a meeting for a very aliljoy-esque student organisation. A group of young ladies are gathered to discuss everything from leadership and women’s issues to pop culture. Eventually the conversation turns to a subject that most teens and 20-somethings love to discuss: relationships. After we rant about the trials and tribulations of... Read the rest of this post...

The Q-Word: When ‘Never Give Up’ Isn’t the Best Advice

quitting-winners

If there’s anyone that society loathes more than a failure, it’s a quitter. From the time we are kids, we’re constantly bombarded with feel good sayings about “not quitting”. Sure these sayings have wisdom. Perseverance is an important trait and is key to success. Many of the world’s great artists, scientists, athletes, businesspeople, and the like have stories of how they... Read the rest of this post...

What My Brother Taught Me About Tolerance

Erin and Derek

I spent much of my childhood attending a traditional Baptist church. The kind of church where congregants were told that dancing in a secular setting was a no-no, drinking was taboo, and three hour (or longer) services were the norm. We were also taught that homosexuality was an abomination. In fact, our pastor preached entire hellfire-induced sermons about how ‘it was... Read the rest of this post...

I Got Played: Spotting Manipulators

children-corn

I recently got friend dumped. She was a friend of several years, who I could see being a bridesmaid at my (eventual) wedding. And although we no longer lived in the same city, we made it a point to keep in contact often.  Which was why I was surprised to get a short and sudden message from her stating that... Show ‘Em What You’ve Got

Shameless Maya

Dinnertime at the Johnson household usually means being subjected to my mother’s fascination with back-to-back nightly news, and last weekend was no different. After getting bummed out about all the mayhem in the world, and realising that the news anchor was wearing hipster glasses, a story came on that got me thinking about my professional life. The report was on career coach, Peggy Klaus, who has a programme that teaches high school girls how to brag. She said that women have a tendency to 'put our heads down and do really good work', while cheering for co-workers.

What’s Holding You Back?

letting go

There are times in our lives when Murphy’s Law seems to be in full effect, and everything that can go wrong really does go wrong. Perhaps money gets tight or you encounter constant failure. Or maybe a loved one is lost. Or a medical report comes back with terrible news. Either way, these experiences can have you questioning a lot,... Read the rest of this post...
