Book Club: The Talented Mr Ripley

The Talented Mr Ripley

It’s a bit weird to see one of my favourite films featured in a book club post, but did you know that it was based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith, of Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train fame? And a damn good book it is too! For those unfamiliar, The Talented Mr Ripley is a 1950s-set thriller about a young... Read the rest of this post...

Feel Good Film: Some Like It Hot

some like it hot

They don’t make ’em like they used to! Sure, if you look really close there are a few little things wrong with Some Like it Hot, but if you take it as a simple piece of entertainment, it’s pretty damn perfect. It ticks all of the boxes – endearing female lead, comedy value, catchy soundtrack and a genuine storyline. I... Read the rest of this post...

Feel Good Film: Away We Go

away we go

It’s easy to dismiss Away We Go as another quirky indie flick, rehashing the marmite tropes of the likes of Garden State, Juno and Little Miss Sunshine but this is different. It’s captivatingly quirky and charming, with the right level of schmalzt. And, best of all, it’s a Sam Mendes film. That’s right, in between the likes of American Beauty... Feel Good Film: Heavy Load: A Film About Happiness

heavy load a film about happiness

Typically, music documentaries feature high-profile, big name bands. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that you’ve never heard of Heavy Load – I hadn’t until I saw it at the Cornwall Film Festival a few years ago. It’s one of those films that’s best viewed if you don’t know much about it; but if I... Read the rest of this post...

Feel Good Film: Whip It!

whip it

If you’re looking for the ultimate girl power film, forget Spice World: The Movie, you need to see Whip It! Back in 2009, Drew Barrymore added directing to her already outstanding CV with Whip It (which she also co-starred in and produced!), a film about a high school girl who joins the world of roller derby. It’s a fun, fast and fearless... Read the rest of this post...

Feel Good Film: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

nick and norah

The other day I was sat on the bus on the way home from work with my iTunes on shuffle, having just finished another book. I was skipping through practically every song and figured my best bet for uninterrupted tunes was playing my Top 25 Most Played. And you know what was on there? In amongst practically every track from... Read the rest of this post...

Book Club: Goose

dawn o'porter

Dawn O'Porter is one of the most fabulous women on the planet. You all should have seen her somewhere at least once before - presenting a TV show/documentary, writing columns for Glamour, raising awareness of breast cancer, on the arm of Chris O'Dowd... There's literally nothing this gal can't do. And that's why I was so excited to hear that she had written a young adult novel.

Feel Good Film: Enchanted

enchanted

When I came across Enchanted, I originally planned on it being a 'background' movie but I found myself getting more and more drawn in. It's a film I've seen several times before - I saw it in the cinema and have since bought it on DVD - but it's one of those films that manages to hook you in without realising it, with its gorgeous gowns, catchy tunes and, of course, the dishy male leads.

Feel Good Film: Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park Logo

Last Saturday night, I must have been one of the few people not watching the Eurovision Song Contest. You know what I watched instead? Jurassic Park. And the pressure was on - it was my boyfriend's favourite film growing up and remains in his top five favourite films of all time. And it was my first time seeing it. Would our relationship survive when the final credits roll?

Feel Good Film: Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Bill and Ted

Dudes, there’s this totally bodacious movie you need to check out this weekend. School got you stressed? Party on with Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. (Image via) Most of our aliljoy writers and readers are from that in-between generation – the one where we were only babies/toddlers when the 1980s classics were originally released but saw them at a young enough...
