Feel Good Film of the Week: Zombieland

Zombieland is many things – a buddy movie, a road movie, a bromance, a rom-zom-com (thanks, Edgar Wright, for penning that term after Shaun of the Dead), but most of all, it’s a proper comedy. Jesse Eisenberg is the geeky college kid trying to get home to his parents after a zombie apocalypse kicks off. Along the way, he meets Woody Harrelson’s Tallahassee, a man on a quest to find a Twinkie, and sisters Wichita and Little Rock, who won’t let anyone get in the way of them getting to a theme park. It sounds like it shouldn’t work but it totally does!

It’s not very often that you see a film for the first time and it instantly makes your all-time faves list. Zombieland was one of those films for me. Great cast, sharp script, catchy one-liners, and it’s educational! These are rules to live by, zombies or no zombies!

One of the best things about Zomebieland is that it is so quotable:

‘Time to nutt up or shut up.’ – that’s why I love it. Plus it combines zombies, theme parks and Woody Harrelson in that bloody fantastic cowboy hat (gotta get me one of those!).

Plus it has got such a great cast – Jesse Eisenberg is the thinking man’s Michael Cera, Woody Harrelson, the understated comedy king, Emma Stone is Hollywood’s current ‘go to gal’ and Abigail Breslin a young star destined for great things. And the best bit? Bill fucking Murray’s cameo! Possibly the greatest ever!

I like the film because it’s funny, and a different way to look at the zombie apocalypse. It also has some legends acting in it. It’s easy to watch and is a good compromise between gore/horror and comedy.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the first two feel good film titles. Next week, I want to steer away from Hollywood a little bit and try something a little less mainstream. The title to watch is Garden State (Zach Braff’s directorial debut) and the vote is open to classics, so take your pick from the following awesome titles. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of Katharine Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant or James Stewart.

Good luck trying to pick just one of these!

I’ll see you next time, same Bat time, same Bat channel.

Emma x
