Welcome to Emma’s Feel-Good Film of the Week
By Emma Farley
Hi! I’m Emma, your resident Film Geek. One of the things I love about film is its power to completely manipulate your emotions. You could be having the shittiest of days, but once you grab a brew and packet of biscuits, put your feet up and pop a film in the DVD player, all of your troubles just fade away as you get lost in a hilarious comedy or warm and fuzzy romance.
Each week I want to watch a film with you. Yes, you! Every week, I’ll recommend a few flicks, you guys let me know what you want to see, and over the course of the next week, we’ll watch it and review it in the next post. Don’t forget to tweet us your 140-character reviews and we can really get the conversation going in the comments section. But first, I want to share some of my ultimate feel-good titles with you!
10 Things I Hate About You
A modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this was Heath Ledger’s first starring role. Razor sharp dialogue, an ass-kicking soundtrack and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s dimples make for one of the best contemporary high school films.

13 Going on 30
A mini Jennifer Garner has an angst-filled thirteenth birthday and wishes to bypass the next 17 years of pain and wake up ‘thirty, flirty and thriving’. Wish granted! Except now, bestie Mark Ruffalo is engaged to the wrong girl. Uh-oh!
Big
The original 13 Going on 30 (it’s 16 years older) stars Tom Hanks in the Jennifer Garner role. His performance was so convincing that it even earned him an Oscar nomination (plus one for Original Screenplay).
Hitch
I’m a bit disappointed that Will Smith spends most of his time making Hollywood blockbusters these days. He’s a master of comedy and a great romantic lead. Here he plays a date doctor who tries to hook Kevin James up with a rich heiress, while trying to win the affections of Eva Mendes’ reporter.

How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days
Sometimes the cheesy, predictable ones are the best! Matthew McConaughey bets his colleagues that he can make any girl fall in love with him in ten days, while Kate Hudson needs to make a guy dump her in the same amount of time. A chance meeting in a bar can only end in hilarity!
I Love You, Man
Take two of the most hilarious yet adorable actors working today and you’ve got one helluva bromance. Paul Rudd gets engaged to the love of his life but soon realises he doesn’t actually have any male friends to ask to be his Best Man. Enter Jason Segel. This film will make you want to “slappa da bass” for hours on end!
Mamma Mia
This is the ultimate marmite film – you either love it or hate it. I, for one, love it. A gorgeous location, a sing-along soundtrack and a topless Dominic Cooper? Mamma Mia, indeed!
Mrs Doubtfire
When Robin Williams and Sally Field separate and she won’t let him see the kids after school, there’s only one thing for it – drag! A surprisingly heart breaking and heart warming story of a father’s love for his children.

Priceless
Audrey Tautou oozes charm and sex appeal in this contemporary Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She plays a gold digger who meets her match when she hooks up with a lowly bartender. Cute, quirky and funny.
So I Married An Axe Murderer
Before Austin Powers and Shrek, Mike Myers played a hilarious poet who suspects his wife is a murderer in this whacky comedy.
I’ve asked the rest of the Joy crew to pick one of those titles for us to watch over the next week and they’ve picked: How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days. Give it a go when you need some time out and tweet us your thoughts. Then check back here next week and we can share our favourite bits. I hope you like it!
As for the following week, I want to know what you want to see. Pick the film you’d most like to watch and talk about and your favourite could be announced as the winner next week. The genre for this week’s options is comedy. Just leave the title of your choice in the comments section below.
I’ll see you next week – same Bat time, same Bat channel.
