2014: The Round Up
It always seemed so distantly in the future, right?
But it’s here. It’s New Year’s day; it’s the first day of a brand new year.
It’s hard to think of these brand new starts, these fresh-faced days when all you know of 2014 is that it smells like what remains of last nights’ indulgences on your clothing.
We are all living in times of uncertainty. In fact, I couldn’t tell you where I’ll be in one year’s time. Hopefully I’ll be employed – that would be a start. However, certain events are scheduled to take place, and some exciting ones at that.

2014 Round Up
Sport
First of all it’s a going to a be a great year for sport.
‘Woooohooo!’ I hear you cry.
But seriously, I’m not usually one for football but the World Cup is always good fun. Hopefully we’ll do a little better this time around. I still remember watching the fateful England vs. Germany game in the Dutch hostel I worked at.
‘Right,’ thought I, ‘from now on I’m Dutch,’
Although perhaps the most tension lies not in who will hold the cup at the end, but whether Rio will be ready to host at all?
We also have the Commonwealth games to be hosted in the UK’s own bonnie Glasgow.
And the Winter Olympics in Sochi, which has already caused some collateral in Russia; from the release of Pussy Riot to the detonation of suicide bombs within various Russian cities. In six weeks time we’ll see whether that dastardly Rooski Putin can keep the status quo. Especially when the world is watching.
But enough about the sport…
Politics
In terms of politics there is the mid-term elections in the USA and a little closer to home; the Scottish referendum. I would like to hope that the Scots decide to stay with us – and not solely because the union jack would look a bit shit without the blue.
Apocalypse
There’s another (yes another!) rapture scheduled for the 22nd February. This time it’s the Viking apocalypse, featuring the Norse god Odin being killed by the wolf Fenrir and the earth being swallowed by the ocean. Apparently two very large fish being washed up on the Californian coast was sign that THIS IS AN ACTUAL THING THAT COULD HAPPEN, although I wouldn’t advise you to sell your house and investments just yet.
Remembrance
Later on in the year we will witness the 100-year anniversary of the beginning of World War one.
Weather
We should also expect a great deal more on the natural disaster front. And although I am a bit partial to some storm watching. I know I am lucky that I wasn’t affected by the flooding that left many people homeless at Christmas.
Trends: Fire Breathers
On the entertainment side, dragons seem to be a recurring theme. We have the release of the new Godzilla (okay might not necessarily be a dragon but it breathes fire and is scaly- that’s good enough for me). We’ll finally be released from the slow torture of the Hobbit triology (that really, REALLY didn’t need to be a triology). Hiccup and that really frickin’ cute sidekick of his return in ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’, and then finally ‘Where are Her Dragons?’ It’s the first tv series to ever give me a near heart attack experience (you know which episode I’m talking about): Game of Thrones is back!
So, overall, lots to busy ourselves coming year.
Apparently 85% of people think that 2014 will be better than 2013 and I have to say I think I’m one of them.
And even if it’s not then we might all be swallowed in a few weeks- so here’s to a new (hopefully not too brief) 2014!
Happy New Year!

Great start to the year Beth 🙂 Although it’s got a lot to live up for, I certainly like to think that 2014 will be better than 2013!!
