She Runs #LikeAGirl, She Writes #LikeAGirl
This morning I got up, didn’t bother showering, put my hair in a bun, shoved on my lycra combo and then ran 5K. After I finished, I had a protein bar, showered and dressed and put a bit of makeup on.
This sounds pretty standard doesn’t it? But what if we add a certain clause in…
This morning I got up, didn’t bother showering, put my hair in a bun, shoved on my lycra combo and then ran 5k like a girl. After I finished, I had a protein bar, showered and dressed and put a bit of makeup on.
See the difference?
Did my run suddenly become an image of arms flailing and my legs skipping wearily?
Somehow I have managed to insult myself by simply referring to the fact I did it LIKE A GIRL.
I’m probably not the first and not the last girl to be told that I do something like a girl.
I can even think back to when I was 15, being told by a lifeguard I probably throw like a girl, before hurling a tennis ball the length of a pool.
But HURRAH! Always (yes the silky sanitary towel people) are fighting back, attacking this statement and reinventing what it means to do something LIKE A GIRL in their new ad.
The wonderfully activist ad by award-winning filmmaker Lauren Greenfield speaks for itself, we use this phrase as an insult and it’s simply another attack on our self-esteem as women.
But thank flying elephants that the younger generations aren’t letting this attack on womanhood affect them!

How can anyone think it’s okay to insult someone by referring to their gender?
There is a way to change this and it’s not from those who have been victims of acting ‘like a girl’ but by those who have used this phrase. STOP NOW.
Next time you even get a hint of thinking to insult someone using ‘like a girl’, just think that by doing so you are acting ‘like a sexist, narrow-minded, unfunny piece of turd’.
Love,
Daisy
