Feminism: Why Emma Watson’s UN Speech Rocked
Last week Emma Watson gave an incredible speech at the UN launching the HeForShe campaign in New York.
‘No country in the world can yet say that they have achieved equality’.
Emma on Global Perspective
It is always a huge inspiration when a celebrity uses their influence and profile to raise awareness for global issues. Because let’s face it, they don’t have to.
‘Both men and women should feel free to be strong’.
Emma on Equality
The thing I love most about Emma’s speech was her passion, authenticity and the fact that she was speaking not as a celebrity but as an ordinary woman, without airs and graces, living in the real world. What a babe!

‘Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one… it is not the word that is important but the idea and ambition behind it’
Emma on Feminism
In her speech she not only spoke about her personal experience but also the importance of men being ‘invited to the conversation’, and the significance of everyone understanding the true meaning of feminism.
‘My life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter’
Emma on her Privileges
She also talked about the harmful effects of patriarchal society on men…
‘How can we effect change in the world when only half of it is invited, or feel welcome, to participate.’
Emma on men joining the Ranks
Shedding light on the bigger picture…
‘I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help, for fear it would make them less of a men—or less of a man.’
Emma on the Effects on Limiting Gender Roles
I hope that post-Emma-Watson’s-UN-speech more people can step up and embrace feminism without stigma attached. And embrace what the whole shebang is about: making progress.
Emma, you go girl!
