Things I Learnt from Online Dating
So I have recently discovered the somewhat marmite world of online dating; some people are really open to trying it, others are very skeptical and are on creep alert at all times.
Now I am of the opinion that yes, as with all social situations there will be some creepy people, but meeting creepy people can happen just as easily in a pub or any other venue in person. However I have virtually met some great people, who are very likeminded and share the same outlook on life as myself.

Rather than rattle on, I shall do my favourite thing to do on blogs, make a list. Here we go people (brace yourselves):
1. There is an array of guys who cannot afford a top, shirt or jumper but can afford a camera phone.
2. I will never trust a lawyer again:
‘Heyh….!!!!! Dis is *******, student of Law
I lyk ur profile in particular wat u wrote abt u….
So, I’want to b ur frnd…. Jst a simple frnd….
Would u allow me to bcum ur frnd’
As my housemate said, ‘are you sure he doesn’t mean he’s representing himself…’
3. There are a lot of single skiers out there. It’s snow joke!
4. Some guys have more interesting photos of their cat than of themselves.
5. If you state you watch cat videos in your spare time (which nerd would do that looks sheepishly away), you will get sent many a cat video (which is not really a problem in my eyes).
6. Talking about dissertations can be really beneficial to the extent you can gather some examples for structural purposes… thanks Mike!
7. You realise that although they seem to be hiding behind a computer, lots of daters have travelled in their lives, and when I say travel I mean further than up the road to the chippy.
8. ‘Hey gorgeous’ ‘You’re cute’ seems to be the favourite initial message for 50% of the dating world.
9. If you state your level of education, then it’s most likely you’ll talk to people of a similar nature.
10. If you put blocks on your profile, ie age, occupation etc… then it definitely helps.
11. Using a generic city ensures your privacy on your profile. London is a good shout! (If you’re near-ish there.)
12. It’s an old rule… but obviously don’t be a fucking wally and give out any contact details about your exact location or full name. This isn’t the place to gather Facebook friends.
13. Guys are very open about their Instagram, Twitter etc… modern society I guess.
14. It seems everyone enjoys the cinema, days out and fun. Hmm… if only I could find someone who didn’t enjoy fun…
15. Theatre types are definitely the most creative with initial messages to do with what you’ve written on your profile (although I am somewhat biased)
16. Some guys just won’t accept being ignored ‘Please talk’, 5 minutes later ‘please.’
17. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try AND try again:
8/2/2013 9:39:38 AM
hey sweet!!!!how are you?
8/2/2013 9:48:54 AM
lets chat!!
8/2/2013 1:27:55
hello how are you?
18. Make good use of the block buttons and similarly, make use of the favourite button! If you don’t want to send messages, then it just gives them a little hint to initiate the convo!
19. Try and remember that if you’re on the site, then there’s bound to be other single, normal people on the site too! You just have to search for them, as they will be searching for you!
20. Remember these tips on the DATE:
- D – Don’t Give full details of where you live but obviously make conversation about home.
- A – Aim for somewhere busy or at least somewhere that’s easy to get to and where you’ll be surrounded by other people and easy travel routes
- T – Text your friend updates if you change location, and updates in general. My friend used the ‘Are you still alive?’ message every 30 mins.
- E – Exciting. Pick an exciting date, doesn’t have to be a restaurant. Try something sporty. If you’re not enjoying the company, at least you’ll have had a fun day out!
And for those of you wondering how my online dating has been… well I have had 2 dates so far, one at an ice cream parlor and one bowling…AND date three is soon. And before you ask me, how each of them was…well they were all with the same guy and he was awesome enough to want to see again… so watch this space!
Love,
DJ
