Stormy Weather: Here’s Cornwall in Pictures

It’s Sunday afternoon and I’ve already found myself in several compromising situations since I left work Friday evening – nudity, ridiculous amounts of booze and slipping over in a ton of mud on a cliff top in front of someone who brought out all the awkward inside of me are just the tip of the iceberg.

But today isn’t about my stories that you really couldn’t script if you tried, it’s about the mighty force that is relentlessly hitting Cornwall as we speak.

We’re cut off from the rest of the country and waves are topping out at over 75ft. Everywhere is flooded, destroyed and battered beyond recognition. We’ve been on weather warnings for what feels like eight years and we’re warned to not travel unless absolutely necessary.

Obviously, that’s not stopped us heading to various coves and harbours to watch Poseidon envelop our coasts.

It’s also attracted the Red Bull Storm Chasers. A group of people who really do take life by the balls and throw themselves head on into experience, and really living life (FYI – round 4 is TODAY! Don’t miss the action!)

I’m almost lost for words when it comes to how dramatically our landscape has changed over the last few weeks. Sea defences have crumbled, caves that we used to happily BBQ in on summer evenings are filled with the cliffs from above and so many towns, villages, homes and businesses are in dire need of being rebuilt.

It’s awesome and terrifying, humbling and phenomenally tremendous. It’s a moment in time that really makes you feel as small as you really are. A tiny grain of sand in this wonderfully huge universe. When you’re sat in your chair with your grandkids around you in your late 80s, the Great Storm of 2014 will forever be the bookmark of comparison for every wave or significant weather event that attempts to crush the Cornish spirit.

Pictures speak louder than words, so here are a few of the amazing images of what we’re battling against. Stay safe Cornwall!
