Give Up Giving Up: Take on a New Challenge for Lent

love-books

Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday – more fondly known as pancake day – which in turn means that Lent starts on Wednesday. I think there’s something interesting about a society of people who, although the majority of whom would not call themselves Christian, let alone Catholic*, still see it necessary to consider giving something up for seven weeks of their lives.... Why ‘My Mad Fat Diary’ Is So Relatable

Rae-You-Cant-Spend-Your-Life-Afraid-450x370

(Warning this post contains spoilers.) I absolutely LOVE Channel Four’s ‘My Mad Fat Diary’. What’s the show about? In a nutshell it’s about a teenager called Rae who is growing up in the nineties. Rae is overweight and suffering from mental health issues. (Image via) Series one focuses on Rae finding new friendships after time away in a psychiatric unit.... Read the rest of this post...

What We Need to Teach Our Kids About Beauty…

blackboard

This week I was horrified to learn that Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington had had a nose job in a bid to quell the torrent of abuse she had suffered since stepping into the spotlight. I sat back, appalled and angered that a bright, intelligent, hard-working woman had felt the need to change her appearance to feel accepted. I, for... Read the rest of this post...

Worry Lines

Dogs_Shar_Pei

If worrying gives you wrinkles, then by now I should look like one of those Shar Pei dogs. I would need a huge vat of anti-wrinkle cream. I am a massive worrier and some days I feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders. Sometimes it’s big things that worry me: global warming, flooding, the recession. Sometimes a small thing that happens can make me worry about a whole heap of other things. I know that worrying is a waste of time and completely unproductive, and I often tell other people this, but I find it difficult to take my own advice.

B*tches Love Abs?

Outdoor life … as we run, the layers of responsibility and identity in our lives fall away.

So I’m driving home from my temp job, feeling pretty content having made a couple-a-quid sitting around ‘playing receptionist’. I casually sing along to some drive time tunes on the radio when it suddenly hits me: “Oh no, oh god no!” I look down; sure enough, there is my Primani rucksack and it smiles at me with tartan teeth. Don’t forget... Brave Heart

celeste-and-jesse-forever

The heart. Muscle. Life-line. Metaphor. Ideogram. Hallmark. The other morning I got the text message. It was a CODE RED, my dear friend, let’s call her Belle*, was having the worst week EVER… On Friday afternoon on Mayfair’s Avery Row three girls assembled in a small coffee shop. One had brought magazines, another had just been called a c**t by... Read the rest of this post...

Is Social Media Channeling a New Wave of Attention Seekers?

teenagers-on-phones_mod

I am definitely against people propagating ideals of themselves for no other discernible purpose than to derive attention. This happens a lot nowadays, especially with the influx of social media and the inevitable purpose for which people use it. There is a never ending cycle of “look at me” and it is relatively frustrating. This is made even more unbearable... Read the rest of this post...

10 Reasons I Might Be Acting Like a Douchebag

tumblr_inline_moox310Gky1qz4rgp

The other day I was annoyed. Really fucking annoyed! 6pm on a Tuesday night waiting for the tube on the crowded platform. Sweaty, dirty, fed-up, frustrated, stressed, cramped in a confined space… I couldn’t even read properly coz someone’s armpit was in my face! There are times when I must ask myself: WHAT IS MY LIFE?!?! This was one of... Read the rest of this post...
