Yay! It’s the first official feel-good film post! I’m so excited to be able to share some of the most heart-warming, inspiring and hilarious films with you. My fellow aliljoy writers have voted for the first title: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

My mum raised me on rom-coms, so it’s no surprise that I have a certain fondness for these flicks now that I’m (slightly) older, particularly of the Julia Roberts/Reese Witherspoon/Kate Hudson variety. And, as a writer, I have a bit of a soft spot for heroines who are in a similar profession. Enter How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days – it ticks all the boxes! Yes, it’s your usual boy-meets-girl, but I’ll bet ya none of the others feature a topless Matthew McConaughey, cute outfits, a genuinely LOL funny script and a female lead you want to be friends with. It’s the ultimate girly film.

“There are two things you will do after this film 1) Play Bullshit for hours 2) Watch it again and again with wine and the girls.”                                                                  – Daisy Jervis, from aliljoy

For those of you checking in who haven’t seen the film in advance, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey as Andie Anderson and Ben Barry (yes, those are their names!) Andie is a ‘How to’ columnist for a leading women’s lifestyle mag and Ben works in advertising. Coincidentally, the same week Andie is assigned to write about (guess what?) how to lose a guy in ten days, Ben bets his colleagues that he can make any girl fall in love with him, in order to score a big-name deal (within ten days – fancy that!) Sure, it’s contrived, predictable and wouldn’t happen in real life in a million years, but it’s the perfect feel-good film. Hudson and McConaughey have the comedic chops to pull off the bigger scenes and the kind of sexual chemistry which makes the screen practically sizzle. The only downside is that you can’t just pull Kate’s dresses from the screen and hang them in your wardrobe!

The point of these feel-good film posts is to recommend a film to y’all, watch them together over the course of a week and share our thoughts. There are few things I like more than talking about films and sharing recommendations with fellow film geeks. And, with that, I’ll hand over to you! What do you love about How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? Are there any rom-coms you rate more highly?

As for next week, the winning title according to you lovely readers is Zombieland! Give it a watch over the next week and tweet us your 140 character review over at @aliljoy. And, as always, let me know some of your favourite feel-good films. I’m forever eager to add to my growing ‘to watch’ list.

In the meantime, don’t forget to vote for the next title! After a rom-com and zom-com, we’ll give indies a go. Take your pick from some of my faves below:

I’ll see you next time, same Bat time, same Bat channel.

Emma x
