Feel Good Film: This is the End

It’s time for some comic relief this week, with This is the End.

It’s easy to dismiss it as just another one of those stoner flicks from the guys behind Superbad and Pineapple Express but, trust me, it’s actually frickin’ hilarious! Written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and starring Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel and Craig Robinson, it’s a veritable who’s who of the comedy world.

It all kicks off at a party at James Franco’s place – and by ‘it’ I mean the apocalypse! That’s right, after hitting the drugs and booze, the guys find themselves more than just tripping when the ground opens up and people start getting beamed up into space in a blue glow. But the best bit? Everyone is playing a hilariously spoofed-up version of themselves. The cast is rounded out with hilarious cameos, including a coked-up Michael Cera, a horny Mindy Kaling and an axe-wielding Emma Watson, to name just a few.

The story itself is completely bonkers – but you laugh out loud so many times that you can forgive the odd slip-up. 99% of the time I can’t stand the sight of Danny McBride but his and Franco’s cum scene is so side-splittingly funny that I quickly got over it. In fact, according to Rogen, about half of the film was ad-libbed, so you can imagine the kind of fun they had when the cameras weren’t rolling!

This is the End is a stoner-comedy and an apocalyptic film but it’s also a buddy movie. The relationship between Seth and Jay is at the forefront throughout the entirety of the film; it deals with the way that friendships change as you grow up and move away, become successful or make new friends. This comes to a hilariously heart-warming climax in the final act, full of revelations and self-sacrifice, and the most memorable cameo – Channing Tatum. Seriously, you’ve got to see this film!

SPOILER ALERT!

And le piece de resistance? THAT ENDING! If you had a bit of a fan girl moment when Jay and Seth were playing computer games, accompanied by a Backstreet Boys soundtrack, you’ll have been on the edge of your seat with your jaw on the ground (much like me) when Jay made his ultimate wish

How about you? What was the last film to make you laugh out loud?
